What got you into this business in the first place?
Advertising always seemed like it was a little bit of science and a
little bit
of magic to me, and that appealed to both sides of my brain.
Who was a big influence in your career?
Dan Gearon. I had to say that!
What attracted you to Gearon Hoffman?
High standards of performance, combined with flexibility, in a culture
that
gives respect to the individuals who comprise this company.
What makes a giant killing brand?
A killer brand can challenge the giant companies by standing for
something,
instead of trying to be all things to all people. This
takes
unwavering discipline. But it works.
What's the most important thing you've learned through
challenging big
brands and winning?
You have to take some risks. Otherwise, you’re going to have
to spend
a lot of money.
What can't you live without?
Truth, Beauty, Freedom, Love.
What are your plans for after advertising?
Maybe I’ll become an itinerant knife-sharpener. I’d
like to become a
good shot at sporting clays.
Is there any food that helps you think more creatively?
Chocolate.
What’s your point of view about politics?
We shouldn’t allow politics to be a career. Politics should be
like
the armed services or the Peace Corps: something people do to
give
service to their country, and then they go back to real life.
Do you have any pets?
I live with a pack of dogs, and one lone cat that tries to ignore the
pack. I
breed, train, and show English Cocker Spaniels and have
a couple of Irish
Water Spaniels to show and train to retrieve ducks.
Dogs
have taught me a lot about life and love, death with dignity,
and the
vagaries of genetics.
What was growing up like for you?
I grew up in “Leave It To Beaver.” My mother's
name is June.
What are your favorite internet sites?
The London
Times online. I like to read
the news that our
government doesn’t want us to know.
